REVIEW
FILM: DUGONG
WHERE: St Kilda Film Festival
It's hard to squeeze a drama piece into a few minutes, the audience usually doesn't have enough time to get to know the characters and as a result don't care enough to reach for the tissues. However, this 18-minute short manages to grab its audience with perfect pace, rhythmically in-tune actors and minimum dialog. I must admit I enjoyed it a lot more the second time round, both Luke Elliot and Brandon Burns did a superb job, Luke has an amazing stillness and Brandon holds his own. The footage of the dugong was just beautiful and is well placed into the storyline, as it doesn't pull the viewer away from the story.

“Dugong“ is a moment in time drama about a loner, Robbie and his faithful
companion Dog, who return home after twelve years to repair the past.
Robbie turns up on the day of his brother Caleb's wedding only to find that he
couldn't have chosen a worse day to have a moment alone with him.
Eventually Robbie corners Caleb and tells him about his life changing encounter
with a dugong - the catalyst for him to seek out their father. But Robbie hasn't said
all he has come to say and after a long day, he works up the courage to tell Caleb
what he discovered about their dad.
In the final moments Robbie must make his largest sacrifice and learns that in
order to truly make amends he must leave a piece of himself behind.
